Lotschental

Friday 22.6.18

The Lotschental is the largest valley on the northern side of the Rhone Valley in the canton of Valais and is surrounded by 3000m high mountains.....the highest being the Bietschhorn at 3934m.

It is thought that the valley was first settled during the Roman period but was largely cut off from the outside world until the start of the twentieth century. Access became easier with the construction to the Lotschbergbahn between 1907 and 1913. This railway was built to connect Spiez in the canton of Bern to Brig in the canton of Valais. It goes into the famous Lotschberg Tunnel just outside of Kandersteg and emerges in Goppenstein some 11 minutes later before continuing its journey down the Brig.

Goppenstein is the starting point for a trip up into the Lotschental. The Postbus from the station takes you to the head of the valley at Fafleralp, the starting point for many fabulous walking experiences.
The classic walk that reveals the true beauty of this valley is the Lotschental Hohenweg
between Fafleralp and Lauchernalp whee the cable car takes you down to meet the Postbus again.
Or you can get the bus to Wiler, take the cable car up to Lauchernalp and do the walk in reverse. Either way it is one of the most stunning beautiful places you will ever visit. The high alpine landscape has magnificent views of the Bietschhorn mountain range. The trail leads over sunny alps carpeted in flowers.....past crystal clear lakes....it really is the most magical of places.....and all part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On this occasion we took the cable car to Lauchernalp and walked to Fafleralp.
Apart from its stunning beauty , the Lotschental is also known for a unique local custom involving the Tschagggatta......rather scary figures wearing furs and carved wooden masks   that apparently walk the streets tossing soot at onlookers! A custom that is now confined to carnival day fortunately.

Saponaria ocymoides, Rock soapwort

Gentiana acaulis, Stemless gentian

Trollius europaeus, Globe flower

Dactylorhiza majalis
It is also possible to walk from Lauchernalp over the Lotschenpass and down to Selden in the Gasterntal, and from there down to Kandersteg.  We did it....back in 2000. A magnificent if exhausting walk up to the Lotschenpass Hut at 2690m....a privately owned hut that sits on the pass itself. Across the Lotschen glacier.....the route across is usually marked by poles.....down to Gffalalp and Selden. We had not reserved a place on the bus so we continued on down to Kandersteg on foot. The whole thing took us around 10 hours!
