Daubensee

 Another gloriously sunny day. On this day we had decided to return to the Spittelmatte and continue on up the trail to Daubensee.
Daubensee is a lake on the route from Kandersteg to the Gemmi Pass.

 Daubensee means Grey water or Lake. But today the Daubensee was more or a Blausee ......lots of lovely blue water.
The lake can be reached by walking from the Sunnbuel cable car station, out over the Spittelmatte and up the track to the Berghotel Schwarenbach. At a point between the Spittelmatte and Schwarenbach you will cross the border between Bern and the Valais.
Great hot chocolate at the Schwarenbach.....on leaving you climb steadily over rocky ground and eventually come to the shallow lake of Daubensee. Sometimes frozen, even in summer, often surrounded by snow. 
Today the water was blue and the snows had receded. We explored the hill side to the right of this picture.....photographed flowers and ate our packed lunch. Heaven.

Wild flower days around Coniston, South Lakes. YEWDALE WOODS

Coniston is a small village situated in the southern part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria. The village  sits on the western shore of Coniston Water and at the mouth of Coppermines Valley. Coniston was called Coningseston in the 12th century, a name derived from konungur, the old Norse word for king....and tun  the old Norse word for farmstead or village. This would give the village the title of the kings' estate. There is speculation that the village could have been the centre of a small Scandinavian mountain kingdom. The village grew as a farming village and a centre for copper and slate mining. The poet, artist and critic John Ruskin lived on the eastern side of the lake from 1871 to 1900 and chose to be buried in the local churchyard instead in Westminster Abbey. Donald Campbell broke several World Water Speed records on the lake and died during another such attempt in 1967 as his jet boat Bluebird K7  crashed at 290mph. Coniston is now a ...

Orchids and other flowers, in and around Cantobre

Cantobre Cantobre Situated on the western edge of the Cevennes National Park and at the junction of the Dourbie and Trevezel rivers, Cantobre is perhaps the most picturesque village in the whole of the Cevennes. This small , old village sits on a rock high above the point where the Trezevel Gorge ends in the Dourbie valley. It is a heart-stoppingly beautiful place. During our first 2 days there in late May 2019, we spotted at least 15 different species of orchid ......that list grew as our stay extended. However, its is not just the orchids, there are many other wildflowers to keep the amateur botanist very happy. The paths in the immediate vicinity of the village are easy walking and very, very rewarding. I intend to concentrate on the little loop from Cantobre, down to the Moulin on the river Dourbie. The path then winds up through some woodland to meet the road just outside the village (Walk 1)......and the loop that leads out...
