A rest day......or so I thought

Thursday 21.6.18

I was promised a rest day, or at least a more restful day. So after walking over 10 miles yesterday we did a mere 4 miles or so today.
We know from earlier visits that Fly Orchids and the elusive Lady's Slipper could be found in the woodland that bordered the Oeschinenbach. So we spent the morning wandering around in that area to see what we could find.
Sadly, the Lady's Slipper was not to be seen at all on this trip but other flowers were plentiful....including the Fly Orchid, Ophrys insectifera.
The Fly Orchid is a wonderful example insect mimicry amongst orchids. But rather than flies, it has actually evolved to lure a particular wasp to act as pollinator.
They are often hard to spot but once you get your 'eye in' they have an almost magnetic attraction. The flowers are indeed like little flies. They grow happily in the scrubland that bodes the river....not in great profusion but enough.
